A backyard swing set is one of the most used pieces of outdoor play equipment you can buy. Unlike toys that get forgotten after a few weeks, a well-chosen swing set becomes a permanent fixture in the backyard, somewhere kids naturally gravitate to after school, on weekends, and through the holidays. We stock swing sets for every backyard size, age group and budget, including freestanding A-frame sets, multi-station play centres with slides and monkey bars, and toddler-specific sets with bucket seats, from Lifespan Kids, Plum Play, Backyard Discovery and Gobaplay, all built to the Australian playground standard AS 4685. Not sure where to start? Our Swing Set Buying Guide compares brands, budgets and features in one place.

Sturdier looking, blend naturally into a backyard, and generally offer higher weight capacities across multiple stations. Brands like Lifespan Kids and Plum Play use treated pine with powder coated steel fittings for the swings and brackets. Better suited to permanent, long-term installation.
Lighter, often more affordable, and can be a good option for smaller yards or families who may want to relocate the set down the track. Metal A-frame sets are typically quicker to assemble than multi-station timber structures.
Swing sets range from compact two-station A-frames around 2 to 2.5m wide, up to multi-activity play centres 4m or more in length once slides, monkey bars and cubby additions are included. Always check the manufacturer's specified clearance zone, most require at least 2m of clear space on all sides and above the swings, not just the footprint of the frame itself. Measure your available space, including clearance from fences, garden beds and other structures, before choosing a size.
Not every swing set needs every feature, but these tend to matter most for real day to day use.
Most standard belt swings suit children from around 3 years and up, while toddler bucket seats are designed for children as young as 6 months to 3 years with supervision. Multi-station sets with monkey bars or higher platforms are generally recommended for children 3 and older. Always check the manufacturer's recommended age and weight limits for each individual station, since they can vary across the same swing set.
The frame itself can be anchored to grass, decking, pavers or concrete, each surface just needs the right anchor type: ground anchors for grass and soft ground, masonry anchors for pavers and concrete. What matters more is the surfacing in the fall zone around and under the swings. Grass, mulch, rubber matting or dedicated soft-fall material all work, and that impact zone needs proper cushioning regardless of what the frame itself is anchored to. See our guides on anchoring a swing set and ground surfacing for the full picture.
Most manufacturers recommend anchoring, particularly for freestanding metal A-frames. Anchor kits are usually included, and anchoring is strongly advised for safety even where the set feels stable on its own.
Yes, many multi-station sets combine a toddler bucket seat with a standard belt swing on the same frame, so siblings of different ages can use it together.
