Freestyle 20 Inch BMX

Progear Torrid 20" BMX Bike Metallic Chrome

The most useful thing we can tell you about the Torrid is who it fits. Progear suggest a rider height of 140cm and up, with a minimum inseam of 61cm. Height gets you close; inseam decides it. A child measuring 61cm or more from floor to crotch can straddle this frame with both feet down, which is where every rider wants to be the moment they stop. Below that, the bike is a stretch and confidence goes backwards.

What makes the Torrid different

Four choices set it apart from a plain twenty inch.

  • Black alloy V-brakesLong-armed rim brakes, alloy lever and clamp. Less squeeze, more bite.
  • 20" x 2.2" freestyle tyresA fatter, rounder tyre that holds its line and softens landings.
  • Front-load BMX stemClamps the bar ahead of the steerer, so the front end sits planted.
  • Velo saddle with integrated seatpostOne piece, so there is no joint to slip under a hard landing.

How to measure an inseam

Stand your child against a wall in their riding shoes, slide a book up between their legs until it is firm at the crotch, then measure from the top of the book to the floor. That is the inseam, and the Torrid asks for 61cm. Standover height, the top tube's height off the ground, is 56cm, so 61cm leaves room to plant both feet. The saddle starts at 67cm.

The Build

Set up for kerbs and skate park laps

Black alloy V-brakes pull the pads hard against the rim, so a smaller hand does not have to haul at the lever. The steel bar is 680mm wide, broad enough for real leverage over the front wheel, and the Velo grips carry a flange so hands cannot slide off. A front-load stem, unicrown fork and 2.2" tyres leave the Torrid steering with weight to it.

One Gear

What 28T and 14T on 170mm cranks feels like

A 28-tooth chainwheel drives a 14-tooth freewheel: two to one, so one turn of the pedals sends the rear wheel around twice. It is a moderate, forgiving gear. A child rolls away from a standstill without stamping on the pedals, then runs out of gear downhill. The 170mm cranks are the levers between foot and chainwheel, long enough to give a taller rider an unhurried push.

Frame And Geometry

The numbers, for people who do not ride

The frame is TIG-welded hi-tensile steel: a tidy weld on tube that flexes and takes knocks instead of shattering, which is what you want from a bike that lives on driveways. Frame size is quoted as 10", the BMX habit of measuring the top tube. Effective top tube 53.2cm, seat tube 27cm at 74 degrees, head tube 11cm, chainstays 37cm, wheelbase 96.3cm. Short enough behind the rider to lift the front wheel, long enough to stay settled at speed.

Finish

Metallic chrome

Chrome is the finish BMX has worn since the start, and it still looks best in late afternoon light. It also takes a fingerprint from every hand, so keep a soft cloth in the shed. Black brakes and a black alloy seat clamp break the shine up. A bell and steel kickstand are fitted.

Torrid Or Classic

Choosing between the two Progear BMXs

We stock both, and they suit different riders. The Torrid is the more freestyle-oriented of the pair: V-brakes rather than calipers, a 2.2" freestyle tyre, 28T and 14T gearing on 170mm cranks, a wider 680mm bar and an integrated Velo saddle. It fits riders from 140cm, where the Classic starts at 120cm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What parents ask us.

What size rider does the Torrid suit?

Progear suggest 140cm and above, with a minimum inseam of 61cm. Standover is 56cm and the seat starts at 67cm, so check the inseam first.

How do I measure my child's inseam?

Stand them against a wall in riding shoes, slide a book up between their legs until it is firm, then measure from the top of the book to the floor.

How is the Torrid different from the Progear Classic 20"?

The Torrid is the more freestyle-oriented of the two: V-brakes rather than calipers, a 2.2" freestyle tyre, 28T and 14T gearing, a 680mm bar and an integrated Velo saddle. It suits riders from 140cm, where the Classic starts at 120cm.

Does the Torrid have gears?

No. It is a single speed, 28T front and 14T rear, so one turn of the pedals gives two of the rear wheel.

What does the warranty cover?

Lifetime warranty on the frame and fork, and a 12-month manufacturer's warranty on non-consumable components.

How does the bike arrive?

In one box of 125 x 22 x 57cm weighing 14.4kg, delivered free Australia-wide.
