What Height Should a Kids Study Desk Be?

Get this right and everything else follows. A desk that is too tall pushes shoulders up and hands out of position, which is why kids slide off the chair after ten minutes. The quickest check takes about thirty seconds with a tape measure.

Sit your child on a firm chair. Feet flat on the floor, knees at a right angle. Measure floor to the top of the thigh, then add about 20cm. That is roughly the desk height you want. If their feet dangle, the chair is the problem, not the desk.

These are working ranges, not rules. Buying at the top of your child's current band gives you a couple of years before the desk feels small. A footrest, or even a stack of books, closes the gap while they grow into it.

What to Look For in a Kids Desk and Chair

• Solid timber over boardTimber tops take knocks, texta and years of use without swelling at the edges. Board is lighter and cheaper, and fine for a first desk that will be replaced.
• Storage you will actually useA drawer or open shelf under the top keeps the surface clear. Deep pedestals look useful and usually fill with things nobody sorts again.
• A matched chairA kids desk and chair set arrives at the right seat to desk gap. Buying the two separately means measuring both, and getting it wrong is uncomfortable rather than obvious.
• Foldable if space is tightA foldable desk turns a bedroom corner into a study spot for an hour, then disappears. Worth it in shared rooms and apartments.
• Rounded edges and stable legsCheck corner profiles and whether the frame racks when you push it sideways. A desk that wobbles gets leaned on and pushed around.
• A finish you can wipeSealed or lacquered tops handle glue, paint and the odd texta line. Raw timber marks permanently the first time.
