Progear Classic 20" BMX in Metallic Chrome: Start With the Sizing

The most useful thing we can tell you about the Progear Classic 20" BMX is who it fits. Progear give a suggested rider height of 120cm to 165cm and a minimum inseam of 59cm. Inseam matters most, because it decides whether your child can stand over the frame with both feet flat on the ground. Standover height here is 56cm, so a 59cm inside leg leaves a little clearance. A rider at the short end has room to grow into it.

Check the fit before you order

Five minutes with a tape measure tells you more than any size chart.

  • Measure the inseamStand your child against a wall in riding shoes. Hold a book up firmly between their legs, spine level, mark the top edge on the wall, then measure down to the floor. That figure needs to be 59cm or more.
  • Standover height, 56cmThat is how tall the frame sits where a rider straddles it. An inseam longer than the standover means both feet reach the ground when they stop.
  • Room to growThe laid-back alloy seatpost is 25.4 x 250 with a 28.6mm clamp, so the saddle starts low and rises as they do.

The Finish

A flashy reflective chrome finish

The frame is chrome plated rather than painted. Progear call it a flashy reflective chrome finish, and that is fair: it throws back whatever is around it, so the bike reads differently in afternoon sun than under a carport. Spokes, headset and bell are chrome plated too.

Frame and Build

Hi-tensile steel, the traditional way

Steel shrugs off knocks and can be worked on with ordinary tools. The head tube, the short tube at the front the forks pass through, is 34 x 30mm. Wheelbase, the distance between the axles, is 95.5cm, which turns quickly without feeling nervous. The headset is chrome-plated steel, and the bottom bracket, the bearings the cranks turn on, is steel UCP.

Alloy black caliper brake and silver brake lever fitted to the Progear Classic 20 inch BMX
Stopping

Caliper brakes on both wheels

A caliper brake reaches over the wheel and squeezes two pads onto the alloy rim from either side. For a child that means a light lever and braking that builds as they pull, rather than arriving all at once. Alloy black calipers front and rear, alloy silver levers on black clamps.

Gearing and Cranks

44 teeth at the front, 16 at the back

One gear, set by the teeth on the front chainwheel against those on the rear freewheel. Forty-four against sixteen is close to two and three quarter wheel turns per pedal turn: light enough to pull away up a driveway, tall enough that they are not spinning on the flat. The steel cranks are 165mm from pedal centre to bottom bracket centre, which suits shorter legs. A chain tensioner holds the 96 link chain in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What parents ask us most about this bike.

What size rider does it suit?

Progear suggest a rider height of 120cm to 165cm and a minimum inseam of 59cm. Check the inseam first, since it decides whether your child can stand over the frame with both feet down.

How do I measure my child's inseam?

Stand them against a wall in riding shoes, hold a book up between their legs with the spine level, mark the top edge and measure down to the floor. Aim for 59cm or more.

Why does standover height matter?

Standover height is how high the frame sits where a rider straddles it, 56cm here. An inseam greater than that means they can stop, stand and step off without landing on the top tube.

What sort of brakes does it have?

Alloy black caliper brakes front and rear, with alloy silver levers on black clamps. Caliper brakes press pads onto the alloy rim from either side, so braking builds as the lever is pulled.

Is the gearing easy for a child to pedal?

It is single speed, 44T at the chainwheel and 16T at the freewheel, a middle ratio for a 20" bike. Easy enough to start on, tall enough to hold speed. The cranks are 165mm.

How does it arrive?

In one carton measuring 121 x 19 x 52cm, delivered free Australia-wide.
