The Game

The game everyone knows, grown to 94cm tall

Four in a Row is a game almost nobody needs taught. Drop a disc in the top of the grid, watch it fall to the lowest empty slot, and line up four of your colour before the other side does.

This one stands 94.2cm high on its own two feet and stretches 117.6cm long. That change of scale changes the game. Nobody hunches over a coffee table. You stand back, read the whole grid from across the lawn, and the discs land with a knock.

The Size

117.6cm long, 94.2cm high

Both numbers are worth picturing. At 94.2cm the top of the frame sits around waist height on most adults, which is where you want it for dropping a disc in.

For a child it sits closer to chest height, so the top row is a stretch. Younger players work the bottom of the grid, older ones fight over the top.

The Frame

Solid pine, standing on its own two feet

The frame is solid pine. Empty, it is easy to see what you are getting: an upright panel of slots held between two rails, on feet that spread the weight either side.

Free-standing matters here. On a lawn there is no wall to lean it against and no table to sit it on. It holds itself up, so you put it wherever the shade is.

How It Stands

A slot joint, not a bag of hardware

Look at the base and you can see how it stays upright. The foot slots into the frame, timber into timber, and that joint carries the load. It is simple, and it is why a game this tall never feels precarious.

The Footprint

Seen side on, it takes up almost nothing

From the side the game nearly disappears. The panel is thin and the feet run out either side of it, so it claims a narrow strip rather than a square metre of lawn.

The Grid

Seven columns, six rows, forty-two slots

Count across and you get seven columns. Count down, six rows. Seven sixes are 42, exactly how many discs come in the box.

That is not a coincidence, and it is quietly useful. A game played all the way out fills the board and empties the disc bag, so you know if one has rolled under the deck.

Build

Thick enough to hold a disc square

Edge on, you can see how much material sits between the front and back faces of the panel. It needs that depth: a disc has to sit square in its slot and stack neatly on the one below, and a thin panel would let them lean and jam. Weatherproofed

Varnished to shrug off everyday splashes

The timber frame is coated with a clear protective varnish, so it takes daily moisture and the odd accidental splash in its stride, whether that is a stray sprinkler or a sudden shower mid-game. It is a coating built for real backyard use, not a display piece that needs to be kept pristine.

Like any timber game, it is not built for a proper soaking, so if it does get wet, a quick wipe-down and a spot to air-dry in the open is all it needs before its next game.

The Discs

Forty-two discs, about 11cm across

Twenty-one yellow, twenty-one red, each roughly 11cm wide. Hold one and the difference from the tabletop game is immediate: a two-handed object for a small child, an easy one-handed one for everybody else.

Little hands can pick one off the grass without pinching at it, the colours read from a distance, and a dropped disc is too big to lose in the lawn.

How It Plays

Four in a row, in any direction

Pick a colour each and take turns. Drop a disc into any column and gravity does the rest, landing it on the stack already there. First to four of their colour in a line wins.

A line counts across, up and down, or on the diagonal, and the diagonal is where most games are won. It is the one people stop watching for.

Packing Away

Two bags, so nothing goes missing

Two black carry bags come with it, both marked with the Jumbo Games logo. The large one is flat and takes the frame; the small one takes the discs. Splitting them up is sensible, because 42 discs loose in the boot is how you end up with 40.

They also make it portable, so it can go to the park or the beach.

Two players, or two teams

At its simplest this is a two-player game, one colour each, alternating turns. It also works as two teams, which is how it tends to go once a few people are standing around it. Each side takes a colour and shares the decision.

Teams change the feel of it. There is discussion, second opinions, and someone always spots the blocking move a moment too late. It suits mixed ages, and games are short.

Where to put it

It is free-standing, so it goes wherever there is a flat patch and room either side.

In the backyard

On level grass or paving, ideally in the shade. It needs very little room, and everyone else watches from where they sit.

How many people can play?

Two players, one colour each. It can also be played as two teams, with each side sharing a colour and agreeing where the next disc goes, which is how it usually ends up at a party.

How do you win?

By getting four of your colour in a line, running across, up and down, or diagonally. Diagonals are the ones most players miss, so they decide a lot of games.

How many discs come with it?

Forty-two, split into 21 yellow and 21 red. The grid is seven columns by six rows, which is also 42 slots, so a game played out fills the board exactly.

How big is it, and how much room does it need?

It is 117.6cm long and 94.2cm high. Because the panel is upright and the feet run out either side, the floor space it takes is narrow. Allow standing room on both faces.
