Best Ground Surface Under a Swing Set

Wooden backyard swing set installed with proper safety surfacing underneath

Grass looks the part under a swing set, but it's a poor shock absorber, and the highest-impact spots (under the swings, at the base of a slide) wear down to hard-packed dirt within a season. The right surfacing underneath meaningfully reduces the risk of injury from falls.

Why Surfacing Matters

A fall onto a soft, cushioned surface absorbs impact very differently to a fall onto compacted dirt or grass over hard clay. The taller the swing beam or platform, the more this matters, which is why fall height and surfacing are considered together in the Australian playground safety standard, AS 4685.

Comparing Your Surfacing Options

Surfacing Min. depth Pros Cons
Rubber mulch ~15cm Excellent shock absorption, doesn't rot or attract pests, stays put in wind Higher upfront cost, can hold heat and smell on very hot days
Engineered wood fibre ~23cm Strong shock absorption, natural look, relatively affordable Breaks down over time, needs topping up every couple of years
Pea gravel ~23cm Inexpensive, doesn't rot, low pest attraction Shifts easily underfoot, choking hazard for toddlers, not ideal near sandpits
Play sand ~23cm Low cost, soft underfoot, doubles as play material Tracks indoors, compacts when wet, needs regular raking to stay effective
Minimum Surfacing Depth Rubber Mulch 15cm Eng. Wood Fibre 23cm Pea Gravel 23cm Play Sand 23cm

Depths are general minimums for swing sets under ~2.4m fall height; taller equipment needs more.

Why Grass Alone Isn't Enough

Grass can work as a starting surface for low platforms and light use, but under a swing's landing zone or the base of a slide, foot traffic and impact wear it down to bare, compacted soil within a season, exactly the spot where cushioning matters most. If you're not ready to commit to a full surfacing material yet, at minimum plan to monitor and reseed high-wear zones regularly.

How Much Surfacing You Actually Need

Depth requirements scale with fall height, taller platforms and swing beams need deeper, more forgiving surfacing underneath. As a starting point, extend surfacing at least 1.8m beyond the equipment on all sides, and further in front of and behind active swings to cover the landing zone from a jump.

Coverage tip: it's more effective to surface the full safety zone properly than to spread a thin layer over a wider area. A well-covered core zone beats a thin layer everywhere.

Installation & Upkeep

  • Lay a weed barrier first underneath loose-fill surfacing to stop it sinking into the soil and weeds growing through.
  • Edge the area with a timber or composite border to keep loose fill contained within the safety zone.
  • Check depth seasonally, loose materials compact and scatter with use and need topping up.
  • Rake and redistribute periodically, since traffic concentrates wear in the highest-use spots.

Getting surfacing right underneath a swing set is one of the simplest ways to reduce fall injury risk, and it pays off for as long as the equipment is in use.
