What's the difference between a toddler playground and a standard swing set?

• Wider, shallower steps instead of vertical ladder rungs, making climbing accessible for toddlers just developing leg strength

• Bucket or cradle swings rather than belt swings, supporting children who aren't yet strong enough to hold themselves upright independently
• Chunky, easy-grip handrails sized for small hands

As children approach 4–5 years, many toddler playgrounds can be upgraded with additional accessories or swapped for a larger play set.

Key features to look for

Slide type: Enclosed tube slides feel safer for anxious children; open wave slides are more exhilarating. Straight slides are easier to slow down on than curved ones - important for very young children.

Frame material: Timber (FSC-certified pine or treated hardwood) is aesthetically appealing and cool to the touch in summer, but requires periodic sealing or oiling. Powder-coated steel is low maintenance and very durable but can get hot in direct sun. HDPE plastic panels are common on modular systems - they don't splinter, fade, or rust.

Footprint: Measure your available space carefully, including the recommended fall zone around the equipment (typically 1.8 m clear on all sides of any elevated component). Most toddler playgrounds require a footprint of at least 3 m × 3 m.

Anchoring: Check whether the set requires ground anchoring (most do for stability and safety compliance). Some sets include anchor kits; for others these are purchased separately. Concrete anchoring is the most secure option.
