How to choose the right swing set (without regretting it)

Most swing sets look great in photos. What matters is how they work in your backyard, with your kids, not just on day one, but over the next few years. These are the things that actually make a difference.

1. Backyard size (this catches people out)

You don’t need a huge yard, but layout is everything. Width and clearance matter more than height, especially once kids start swinging properly. Make sure there’s enough space around the swing arc so it’s safe and doesn’t feel cramped.

2. One child or siblings?

A single swing works… until someone else wants a turn. If you’ve got siblings or kids who love having friends over, double swings or add-ons make a big difference. Fewer arguments, more actual use.

3. Age range and how long it’ll last

Some swing sets are perfect for younger kids but get outgrown quickly. Others are designed to last for years. If you’re buying with the hope of not replacing it anytime soon, check weight limits, swing types, and whether parts can be upgraded later.

4. Timber vs metal (the honest version)

Timber swing sets look great and feel solid, but they do need ongoing care, similar to decking or outdoor furniture. Metal swing sets are lower maintenance, but are often lighter and less flexible when it comes to customising. There’s no right or wrong choice, just what suits your space and how much upkeep you’re happy with.
